Bonventre, J. V., M. Brezis, N. Siegel, S. Rosen, D. Portilla, and M. Venkatachalam. Acute renal failure. I. Relative importance of proximal vs. distal tubular injury. In: Acute renal failure forum, edited by W. Lieberthal and S. K. Nigam. Am. J. Physiol. 275 (Renal Physiol. 44): F623–F632, 1998.—For more than 15 years, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the nephron segment(s) most severely injured in acute renal failure (ARF) induced by an ischemic or toxic insult. Although some investigators have argued that the proximal tubule (and particularly the S3 segment) is the major target of injury in ARF, others have held the view that damage to the distal nephron [particularly the medullary thick ascending limb (MTAL) segment] plays a more important role in this disease. In this discussion, the first of three on different aspects of ARF that have been hotly debated, we have invited several experts to discuss their opinions on this issue. The goals of this first discussion (and the subsequent two articles in this forum) are to establish areas of consensus in each area of controversy and also to identify unanswered questions that represent important areas for future research.

متن کاملRejoinder: Bayesian Checking of the Second Levels of Hierarchical Models
We would like to thank the discussants for the valuable insights and for commenting on important aspects of model checking that we did not touch in our paper. Our goal was modest (but crucial): to select an appropriate distribution with which to judge the compatibility of the data with a hypothesized (hierarchical) model, when the test statistic is not ancillary and an improper prior is used fo...
متن کاملRejoinder of “ Hypothesis testing by convex optimization ” ∗
First of all, we would like to thank all the discussants for their interesting, thought–provoking comments and thorough investigation. We also thank the editors for the opportunity to comment briefly on a few issues raised in the discussions. The comments of the discussants underline importance of the topic discussed in our paper, namely, that of application of convex optimization methodology t...
متن کاملDiscussants and the Quality of Interactions at Conferences
Discussants play an important role in conferences, yet little practical advice exists to help them make best use of their time beyond informal guidelines. Two new approaches to the intellectual discussion of conference papers are introduced: Group Support Systems and Conversational Learning. The discussant’s role is illustrated with reference to each of these approaches. Recommendations for dis...
متن کاملRejoinder: Quantifying the Fraction of Missing Information for Hypothesis Testing in Statistical and Genetic Studies
Few authors would not be pleased when discussants implement their methods or follow-up on their ideas. It is therefore a professional joy to see every discussant doing both! Our heartfelt thanks go to all discussants, and to the Executive Editor, Ed George, for bringing us such joy! Incidentally, the three discussions cover nicely the three main parts of our paper. Zheng and Lo’s discussion cen...
متن کاملSubgroup Detector: A System for Detecting Subgroups in Online Discussions
We present Subgroup Detector, a system for analyzing threaded discussions and identifying the attitude of discussants towards one another and towards the discussion topic. The system uses attitude predictions to detect the split of discussants into subgroups of opposing views. The system uses an unsupervised approach based on rule-based opinion target detecting and unsupervised clustering techn...
